Where to Find the Axe
The Axe is at the end of the overgrown cave on the lower goblin-cave and crypt approach. Equip it and strike the large brown root barriers to clear them, including the roots near the hub campsite.
If you are approaching from the goblin caves, find the cave entrance opposite the hub's double wooden doors. Descend roughly two flights toward the overgrown chamber and investigate its far end. From the sewers, use the shortcut route below to reach the tunnel containing the Axe.
Prepare for the Sewer Approach
The route below starts from the manhole shortcut opened on the approach to the Giant Moray Eel. The ladder on the right along that approach leads to a manhole cover you can open, connecting the sewers to the main hub. The Axe itself is a cave pickup on the crypt approach, not an item awarded by the eel.
Earlier sewer progression uses the Hammer to break bars, the Pickaxe to clear yellow goo, and a Grappling Hook to reach raised ledges. The Boat mechanism needs an Iron Rod and Chains before you can use it. Craft the Grappling Hook from a Hook and Rope in your inventory; the Hook itself is crafted at the Workbench.
Return to the main camp to store spare items and refresh your food buffs before heading underground again. Leave room to collect the Axe when you reach it. Concentrate on retrieving the tool first, then decide whether to explore the surrounding passages.
Follow the Sewer Shortcut to the Axe
- Take the manhole shortcut from the main hub back into the sewers. This returns you to the connection opened on the approach to the Giant Moray Eel.
- Take the broken-gate branch when you reach the path split while backtracking. This is the branch that leads onward toward the Axe approach.
- Turn the wheel to lower the water. With the water lowered, you can continue along the route toward the low opening.
- Crouch through the hole into the next area. A skeleton attacks as you arrive, so be ready before moving farther into the passage.
- Sprint-jump across the gap onto the stairs beside the grassy area. Landing on those stairs puts you on the next section of the cave approach.
- Follow the passage into the tunnel and continue to its far end. The Axe is located there, beyond the section with the grassy area.
- Pick up the Axe at the end of the tunnel. You now have the tool needed to cut the brown root barriers encountered around the dungeon.
- Strike the brown roots you passed on the left with the Axe. Cutting them clears that barrier and gives you an immediate place to use your new tool.
Root Barriers to Revisit
Return to the brown roots near the Axe approach and the hub campsite with the Axe equipped. Strike the roots themselves to remove the barrier. The Great Axe also cuts substantial root barriers, giving you another suitable tool once you have it.
Keep the Axe with you when heading for the Corn Gem. That route requires a Grappling Hook to reach a high doorway, followed by crossing the room and cutting the roots on the opposite side. The chest behind those roots contains the Corn Gem and a Grinding Stone.
Use the Correct Tool for Each Barrier
The Axe clears substantial roots, but yellow goo, rusty bars and rock piles need different tools. Check the blockage before spending more swings on it. Use the matching tool below when you return to a blocked passage.
| Barrier | Tool to Use |
|---|---|
| Large brown root barriers | Axe or Great Axe |
| Yellow goo piles | Pickaxe |
| Rusty metal bars and fences | Hammer |
| Rock piles | Explosives |
How to Craft a Replacement Axe
Collect the placed Axe before trying to craft a replacement. The recipe requires you to have had an Axe in your inventory, so gathering its ingredients alone does not satisfy that requirement. After discovering the tool, you can craft another at the Workbench.
- Gather 1 Leather and 2 Iron Rods. These are the materials needed for the Axe recipe at the Workbench.
- Select the Axe recipe at the Workbench after collecting your first Axe. This is where you make the replacement tool.
- Craft the selected recipe with the required materials. It produces 1 Axe for you to take on your next trip.
For more Leather, turn 2 Animal Hide into 1 Leather at the Workbench. A Smelter provides another way to obtain Iron Rods by processing Scrap Metal with Coal. Set aside the Axe materials before spending them on other equipment if you want a replacement ready.
