Get Clay from yellow Goo Piles
Get Clay by breaking yellow Goo Piles with a Pickaxe along the sewer and prison routes. Find the Pickaxe in the lower spider prison, then revisit accessible piles; a few replenishing spawn points can also supply Clay.
Find the Pickaxe before gathering Clay

Look for the Pickaxe in the lower spider prison, behind the door with skeleton archers above. Pick it up before returning to the yellow Goo Piles you passed earlier. Leave space for materials so you can bring your Clay back to camp.Playing this video connects to YouTube.
The Workbench also offers a Pickaxe recipe, added in patch 1.0.51.0. Check it if you need to craft a Pickaxe. For the sewer route below, bring the Hammer as well, because the metal bars on the approach require that tool.
Follow the sewer route to the wall Goo Pile
Start at the hub camp with your Pickaxe and Hammer. This route takes you into the sewers to yellow goo covering a doorway. Prepare your food and clear inventory space before leaving so you can finish the gathering trip without an unnecessary return.
- Descend the rope behind the hub camp's stairs to return to the sewers.
- Lower the sewer water via the left-hand route if it is still high, making the lower section accessible.
- Follow the right-hand path from the rope to the stairs, which lead toward the barred passage.
- Break the metal bars with your Hammer to open the passage ahead.
- Drop into the drained section beyond the bars to reach the yellow goo on the wall.

Strike the yellow Goo Pile with your Pickaxe to break it; the pile can drop Clay and reveal the door behind it.Playing this video connects to YouTube.
- Return to camp with your collected Clay when you have enough for the craft you are working toward.
Other places to check for Clay
| Clay source | How to collect it |
|---|---|
| Yellow Goo Piles in the sewers | Break accessible piles with the Pickaxe for a chance at Clay. The wall pile on the hub route also reveals a doorway when destroyed. |
| Goo Piles along prison routes | Check the accessible prison areas after obtaining the Pickaxe. Break the Goo Piles you find, but keep searching if a pile does not give Clay. |
| Replenishing spawn points | Collect Clay when it appears at a replenishing spawn point. Treat these pickups as extra supplies alongside gathering from Goo Piles. |
Clay is not guaranteed from every Goo Pile. Keep checking other accessible piles when you still need more for your next craft. Make Goo Piles your main target, with spawn-point pickups supplementing what you collect.
Budget Clay for stations and the Statue Mold
Choose your next craft before spending the Clay. The Oven, craftable Smelter and Water Pot use it, while the crypt's Statue Mold needs a larger batch for each statue. Reserve materials for the station or statue directly blocking your next objective.
| Craft or interaction | Materials and result |
|---|---|
| Oven for baking | Use 5 Clay and 1 Grate in the Crafting menu. Keep Coal ready to run it; the Oven bakes Raw Deep Dish Pizza into Deep Dish Pizza. |
| Smelter for Iron Rods | Use 5 Clay and 5 Scrap Metal in the Crafting menu. Supply Scrap Metal and Coal to produce Iron Rods. |
| Water Pot for fresh water | Use 4 Clay and 1 Iron Rod in the Crafting menu to create a fresh water source. |
| Statue Mold in the crypt | The mold's hint reads "Bring clay." Supply 16 Clay per statue and use the Handle to cast a statue for the puzzle. |
Prioritize the Smelter when Iron Rods are holding up your crafting, or reserve Clay for the Oven when baking is your next goal. Build a Water Pot when having fresh water at camp is worth the materials to you. Before using the Statue Mold, move the available statues into place so you only cast the ones you still need.
The Iron Key does not need Clay
The craftable Smelter produces Iron Rods, while the dungeon's big smelter casts keys from molds. The big smelter takes Coal, Scrap Metal and a mold, with no Clay in its inputs. If your immediate goal is the Iron Key, continue with key forging without spending Clay on a camp Smelter.
