Put your armor into use

  1. Open your inventory to see the armor item's current interaction prompts and the controls shown for it.
  2. Compare the item's Damage Reduction and Noise While Moving lines before the trip, so you know which protection and noise tradeoff you are choosing.
03

Compare armor protection and movement noise

Body armor, capes and shields are separate equipment categories with different effects. Use the body armor rows to compare protection, and the cape rows to compare quieter movement. Check the effect line rather than choosing a piece only by its name.

GearEffects
Breast Plate+30% Damage Reduction; +25% Noise While Moving.
Cape-50% Noise While Moving.
Crude Leather Armor+15% Damage Reduction; +25% Noise While Moving.
Detailed Armor+35% Damage Reduction; +50% Noise While Moving.
Golden Breast Plate+40% Damage Reduction; +50% Noise While Moving.
Leather Armor+20% Damage Reduction; +25% Noise While Moving.
Padded Leather Armor+25% Damage Reduction; +25% Noise While Moving.
Scrap Cape-30% Noise While Moving.
Shoulder Armor+10% Damage Reduction.

Crude Leather Armor, Leather Armor, Padded Leather Armor and Breast Plate share the same movement-noise penalty, with stronger damage reduction as you move through that group. Detailed Armor and Golden Breast Plate offer stronger protection alongside a larger noise penalty. Compare the protection you want with the extra noise you are willing to accept before choosing your gear.

The Cape reduces movement noise more than the Scrap Cape. If quiet movement is your priority, compare those capes before spending materials on one. Treat their noise reduction as a different benefit from the damage reduction shown on body armor.

Craft armor and capes at a Workbench

Build a Workbench through the Crafting menu using 3 Wood Planks, 2 Iron Rods and 1 Leather. The Workbench makes the armor and capes listed below. Once you have unlocked Leather and built the bench, you can turn 2 Animal Hide into 1 Leather there when you need more.

ItemWorkbench Ingredients
Crude Leather Armor1 Leather and 3 Animal Hide.
Leather Armor3 Leather and 3 Ragged Cloth.
Padded Leather Armor3 Leather and 5 Iron Rods.
Breast Plate1 Animal Hide and 2 Iron Rods.
Detailed Armor1 Ragged Cloth and 3 Iron Rods.
Scrap Cape2 Ragged Cloth and 1 Vines.
Cape1 Ragged Cloth, 1 Leather and 1 Vines.

Ragged Cloth comes from replenishing item spawn points and has no crafting recipe. Revisit places where you have already found loose supplies if you need more: a spot can produce cloth later even if it gave something else before. Save it for the armor or cape you plan to make.

Iron Rods can be found in the prison area and sewers, and a Smelter turns Scrap Metal and Coal into more. Check which armor recipe you want before using your rods, because the pieces take different materials. Use the recipes table for other equipment you want to craft at the Workbench.

05

Check the armor chest on the crypt route

This chest is an option while you are already exploring the crypt. Check the armor you find before deciding whether to craft another piece. Compare its tooltip with the effects above to choose what to carry.

  1. Platform across to the skeleton archer on the crypt route to reach the water fountain.
  2. Continue slightly past the fountain until you reach another moving door.
  3. Slide the moving door aside to reveal the chest behind it.
  4. Open the chest to find armor and a dagger.
06

Understand shield protection and stamina

A shield has a passive effect while equipped and an active effect while blocking. The Improvised Shield, Wooden Shield and Iron Shield describe blocking as transferring damage to stamina. Watch your stamina when blocking, and consider that behavior separately from body armor's damage reduction and a cape's movement-noise reduction.
